10 Nov Epidural Stimulation Gives New Hope to C6-C7 Spinal Cord Injury Patient From Northern Ireland
Jonathan Weir, a 23-year-old adventure seeker from Northern Ireland, got into a serious mountain biking accident that left him with a C6-C7 Spinal Cord Injury. Without losing hope about his condition and determined to get back on his feet, Jonathan came to Bangkok to undergo the Epidural Stimulation Surgery with Unique Access Medical.
Following the surgery, Jonathan went through an extensive Rehabilitation and Training Program which included a series of Mapping and Physiotherapy. To Jonathan, the Mapping process was the most difficult part, but the result had left him amazed; his movements became stronger in the last few weeks of treatments. Moreover, his Physiotherapy started off with stretching. During this session, the Epidural Stimulator implanted within his spinal cord was used to strengthen his movements.
The best improvement so far for him along with being able to take assisted steps while on the hoist during his Rehab sessions; is his core balance. He can now lift his hands and sit on his bed by himself.
“I’ve seen a lot of progress with my core balance. Before if I ever sat on the bed, I would have to pull my hands to be able to balance. While now I can lift my hands and sit on the edge of the bed.”
He was pleased and satisfied with his progress and wishes to come back to Bangkok next year for more Rehabilitation sessions.
Jonathan was a little nervous before his surgery, something he believes is common in all patients. However, after experiencing great progress, he changed his mind. To him, the decision on coming for the Epidural Stimulation implant has been brilliant and worthwhile in-spite of his doctor’s discouragement back home. Furthermore, Jonathan was impressed with the staff and facilities. Everyone was friendly and made him feel at home, which according to him is the best hospital he has ever stayed in.
Jonathan used to feel that his Spinal Cord Injury had hindered his hope in recovering. Nevertheless, after receiving treatments with us, he improved tremendously within a short period of time. He is now motivated to keep on going and recommends anyone with Spinal Cord Injury to come here for treatments.
“If the treatment is available to you, then you should really go and try it. It is worth it.”
We wish Jonathan all the best and look forward to his upcoming progress. An adventure seeker will continue to seek for more adventure, there is no doubt about that, and this time, we can’t wait to see Jonathan back on his adventure trips once again- just as he wishes for.
