Epidural Stimulation For Spinal Cord Injury

A next-generation treatment
offered by Verita Neuro

Epidural stimulation is an innovative treatment, suited to patients with spinal cord injuries between the C4 and T10 levels. Using established medical techniques, Verita Neuro’s medical board developed this pioneering treatment protocol in 2016. Combining spinal cord stimulation, stem cell treatment, and a physical and occupational therapy program, our epidural stimulation program helps quadriplegic and paraplegic patients to regain lost functions.

What Is Epidural Stimulation?

Epidural stimulation is a treatment procedure that begins with the implantation of a spinal cord stimulation device. Following post-surgical recovery, patients begin a program of physiotherapy. Originally used as a treatment for neuropathic pain, Verita Neuro’s expert medical board saw an opportunity to re-imagine the procedure for the benefit of spinal cord injury patients. Using a process called ‘mapping’, Verita Neuro developed a way to personalize the stimulation to the patient’s body, allowing the return of various functions, including voluntary movement.

Results

The surgery which implants the epidural stimulation device is a minimally invasive procedure. Consequently, patients have an easy and quick recovery. Despite it being a minor surgery, once optimized the stimulator has potentially major outcomes. The vast majority of our patients see:

  • A return of voluntary movement
  • Returned ability to stand up and take steps
  • Improved strength and stamina
  • Increased sensation
  • Improved body temperature regulation
  • Stabilizing blood pressure
  • Improvement in bladder and bowel control
  • Relief from neuropathic pain

Empowerment

As with all of Verita Neuro’s treatments, the goal of our epidural stimulation treatment, in conjunction with regenerative medicine, is fundamentally the empowerment of our patients. The return of motor, sensory and autonomic functions allows patients to regain some level of independence and experience improved quality of life. We continue to support patients after treatment, with follow-ups and fine-tuning (re-mapping) of their spinal stimulator. Therefore, the initial treatment program is merely the beginning of an optimized spinal cord injury recovery journey.

Accessing treatment

A wide range of patients are eligible for epidural stimulation treatment. Almost all of our patients are spinal cord injury patients, although we have occasionally treated patients with neurological disorders, such as hereditary spastic paraplegia.

Epidural stimulation is best suited to patients with C4-T12 level injuries, but we review each patient on a case-by-case basis, following a medical consultation.

We have two sites that deliver our epidural stimulation treatment.
