06 Nov Jonathan’s Journey Towards Recovery from a C6-C7 Spinal Cord Injury
In July 2016, 22- year-old Jonathan Weir had an accident that turned his life upside down. This young man from Northern Ireland lived and enjoyed an adventurous and active life until the accident happened, when he fell off his mountain bike during a weekend trip with his friends. This tragic fall left him with a C6-C7 Spinal Cord Injury and a complete loss of movement in his legs.
Jonathan came to learn about Epidural Stimulation when he watched video testimonials of Andrew Bell, a T5 Spinal Cord Injury patient who was featured on the BBC News after making great progress following his own Epidural Stimulation treatment. The two had an extensive discussion based on Andrew’s personal experience of the protocol, which was of great help to Jonathan before he made the decision to travel to Bangkok for treatment.
Upon arrival at Unique Access’s facility, Jonathan was assured of the credibility of the Epidural Stimulation procedure after learning about several other successful cases of patients who received the treatment and achieved remarkable improvements as a result.
After his Epidural Stimulation surgery, Jonathan started his Mapping sessions. Mapping is a process used to find out the connections between the Spinal Cord and the stimulating device that was surgically implanted on the Lumbar region of the Spinal Cord. Working together with the Physiotherapist during his rehabilitation sessions, Jonathan already saw some flexors in his hip and knees. As he persevered throughout his rehabilitation, Jonathan was already able to stand up on the parallel bars with the assistance of the therapists. Not only that, but he also managed to get up on the treadmill, a result which he was extremely happy and excited about.
“It’s quite amazing to think I am back on the treadmill, whereas i thought i would never be able to stand,” Jonathan said.
In the interview, Jonathan shared with us that despite the challenging nature of the injury, he realised that putting in a lot of effort is an essential element of his recovery.
The young Northern Irishman has decided to keep track of his progress by regularly updating his Facebook page “Jonathan’s story – Living life on the Edge” and to share his story to the well-wishers who have donated to his Fundraising campaign and made his treatment possible.
We wish Jonathan the best in his treatment and his continued road to recovery.
