Gabi Razvan Iordache travelled to Bangkok, Thailand to receive the breakthrough Epidural Stimulation Treatment to treat his C5-C6 Spinal Cord Injury. The life changing event that left him with a quadriplegia happened 22 years ago when Gabi was involved in a diving accident that broke his Spinal Cord. Although the injury he sustained following the accident has always been a physical challenge for him, Gabi never ceased to look for a treatment that could improve his condition. When he found Epidural Stimulation with Unique Access Medical, he knew that there was hope.
By the end of his Treatment Protocol which included the Epidural Stimulation implant, Gabi was overwhelmed with satisfaction and gratitude as he made great progress which was earlier unexpected due to the prolonged nature of his injury. Following several Mapping and Physiotherapy sessions, Gabi regained voluntary movements and flexion in his ankles, hips and knees. This allowed him to perform up to 100 movements a day, compared to merely 5 movements at the earlier stage of his treatment. As this progress began to revive Gabi’s leg muscles, he gradually became strong enough to also walk on the treadmill with the assistance of a hoist machine. To him, this was a big step towards his recovery process.
“I was happiest to have the same feeling [as] when I was standing up and taking steps again after 22 years [in a wheelchair]”, he explained.
Moreover, as a result of his hard work, Gabi experienced strength improvement in his muscles. Even after the Epidural Stimulation device was switched off, his muscles stayed active as he did not have any spasms for up to 15-20 hours.
“To me, this is the most important after 22 years”, he shared in the interview as he was overwhelmed with all the positive results he saw.
Upon his departure back to Romania, Gabi took some time to express his appreciation and acknowledgement of the Unique Access Medical team for their hard work and dedication and for ensuring the highest level of patient care during his time in Bangkok.
Gabi shares a special message to other Spinal Cord Injury patients,
“Never give up. Have faith… There’s hope everywhere. Medicine is developing really fast… This is the best treatment for Spinal Cord Injury patients. It is a new hope, so be optimistic.”
