Unique Access Medical (UAM) is a trailblazing global healthcare innovator that specializes in next-generation treatments for spinal cord injuries (SCI). This past December, after thrilling the crowds at two major medical tourism events in China, we traveled to Cancun, Mexico for a 4-day healthcare exhibition on the beach.
From December 5-8, 2018, we spread the word about our breakthrough procedure for paraplegics and quadriplegics called Epidural Stimulation. As in China, our inspiring patient success stories captured the attention of doctors, therapists, and the numerous SCI patients attending the 25th Mexican Medical Congress on Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation.
The congress attracted over 800 healthcare specialists from around the world, providing UAM with a chance to meet key members of Mexico’s spine-treatment community and introduce our Latin American partner, Grupo Médico Neurogenic — one of the region’s top specialists in neurological disabilities.
Dr. Beatriz Perez Hernandez — Grupo Médico’s resident expert in neurological treatments and rehabilitation — met with a host of surgeons and physicians who, during the first two days of the event, requested consultations for six of their patients.
“Many of our colleagues knew of the Epidural Stimulation treatment, but weren’t sure if it was an option for their patients,” said Dr. Perez. “But here in Cancun, we were able to really demonstrate its effectiveness, which they were thrilled about since it gives them another treatment option for their SCI patients.”
The evidence we presented of Epidural Stimulation’s effectiveness was enlightening to many of the event participants, but it was already well known by a good many others. That’s because, since 2016 when the procedure was made available commercially in our flagship rehabilitation centre in Thailand, we’ve successfully treated over 50 international patients.
UAM’s Head of Patient Services, Mr. Henning Kalwa, explained the popularity of the procedure this way: “Even though for the public we’re still a relatively new healthcare company, we’ve built a great reputation, especially in Latin America where Epidural Stimulation has been so well-received that Argentina’s Ambassador to Thailand met with us.”
The reason high-profile people in Bangkok have shown a serious interest in Epidural Stimulation is because they’re close to the action. They’re able to see firsthand exactly how the procedure empowers SCI patients who thought they’d never move their limbs voluntarily again.
So when an SCI patient visits UAM in Bangkok for treatment — and departs 35 days later with the ability to stand, take unassisted steps, and properly control their bladder and bowel for the first time since their injury — their countrymen want to help spread the word.
“There is serious demand for the procedure now,” said Mr. Kalwa. “So, in keeping with UAM’s philosophy to provide access to excellent medical treatments and high-touch patient care, we’ve entered into two strong partnerships.”
“One is in Brazil and now one in Mexico, with the aim being to simply raise awareness and educate the world’s spinal cord injury patients that there is a real opportunity available for them to regain control.”
UAM’s primary objective when we attend medical conferences — whether in Asia, Europe, or North and South America — is to raise awareness. And since we distributed over 900 Epidural Stimulation brochures to participants of the medical congress in Cancun, we consider that event a success.
Added Mr. Kalwa, “After working for over a decade in the medical-tourism space, I can say with the utmost confidence that I’ve never seen a cutting-edge medical treatment make such an impact. The way Epidural Stimulation changes the lives of quadriplegics and paraplegics and their families is incredible.”
